Residents of Michigan, and most of the Midwest have enjoy a rather rambunctious winter season. There was much snow, and cold, and vortexing to keep us on our toes, locked inside, huddled in front of the television fireplace DVD. With the frigidity of a Viking winter we kept pace with our back to back offerings of Pumpkin Ale, Winter Ale, Belgian Tripel, Belgian IPA and Corktown Stout to keep folks happy during the dark long days of the season. That darkness will soon lift, thankfully. The first batch of Summer Brew has been brewed! In the past, we have pushed back the welcoming of summer until late May, not so this year. Our Summer Brew is happily fermenting for a delivery date of early April. That means you will be able to enjoy our delicious Summer Brew throughout the Spring and Summer. Like the 'longer days' of daylight savings time, so too our delicious American wheat beer, with a hint of orange blossom. Enjoy a few photos of the brewing, and set your alarms for early April and Summer Brew!
While most of our blogs are about special batch beer, or The Malcontent, or shenanigans found in the brewhouse, this one is of a different nature. It's all about the goodness coming out of our garden. A garden that survived one of the coldest winters on record. Our fine team planted our plots last fall just a few blocks away where we have space in the Cass Community Garden at 2nd and Willis. After planting, they made sure to protect the crops with hoop houses. For more info on those see this fine Wikipedia entry - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polytunnel .
Anyhow, the crop weathered the multiple storms, sub zero weather and crazy Viking style wind chill that was ours to bear here in southeast Michigan this winter. That crop has been harvested and will be available for some tasty eating starting tomorrow, the first official day of Spring. Tomorrow, we will have a salad special, made out of the lettuce and greens harvested this week, including Mache lettuce, Arugula and Spinach, along with edible flowers. These greens were slow growing which means they are packed with nutrients and intense flavor.
Stop in tomorrow for our salad special. The first of many this season.
And say hello to Spring!
Of course, it goes without saying that even salad tastes great with beer...
It's March and around here that means we will be offering up our delicious Corktown Stout. Our stout is an Irish Style Dry Stout, named after Detroit's historic Corktown neighborhood. Corktown Stout has coffee undertones with a hint of licorice at the finish. A slightly higher ABV doesn't hurt either.
It is only available one month out of the year, and this year will be at venues all along the parade route. Look for it at your favorite Corktown watering hole.
We will have some here in our Tap Room as well if you find yourself missing the St. Patty's Day Parade on the 16th. #corktownstout #motorcitybrewingworks #detroitstpatricksday
